CORCEL
SIN NOMBRE

“They Always Do”

Raised on bar stools
and jukeboxes.

Corcel Sin Nombre (born Mateo Cavill), named Mateo by his mama after her first boyfriend, spent his youth drifting through the southern edges of Appalachia. He says he grew up in small bars more than playgrounds, sharpening his eye on the dart board and his ear on whatever classics the jukebox felt like offering that day. He knows it wasn’t the ideal place for a kid, but he swears he wouldn’t change a thing. The stories of a broken man five sheets to the wind were always more interesting to him than schoolyard crushes. Those nights became the soil where he started building his own sonic homestead.

He describes himself as quiet, stern, and surprisingly sensitive once you get past the surface. After finishing school, he hit the road to see the country with nothing but his guitar and his dog. He bounced around for a while before trying his luck in Los Angeles. He says he got tired of people telling him he was too handsome with too good a voice not to give it a shot. The lifestyle hit him hard, but he did meet a woman who kept him grounded longer than he expected.

That relationship didn’t last. He jokes about it now, saying they leave, "They Always Do." He made a decent living ghostwriting and filling in for bands, but eventually realized he could do that anywhere. Around that time he got curious about his roots and took an Ancestry test. Turned out he had some Mexican blood. Corcel took it as a sign and decided Guadalajara felt like the right place to explore the other half of himself. He started playing American music in vaquero bars and caught the attention of a local DJ, Zapatekno, who had a strong hand in convincing him to sign with Torta Ahogada Records.

“I liken relationships to seasons. They leave, they come back, and they leave again. They always do.”
